Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Lucknow (U.P)

Date of Event: 7th August, 2026

Organised by: Maharishi Industry Relations Cell & Maharishi School of Engineering and Technology in association with and IQAC

Objective: Maharishi Industry Relations Cell and Maharishi School of Engineering & Technology (Maharishi University, Lucknow Campus), in association with IQAC, organized an industrial visit to Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), on 7th August 2026. The visit was organized with the objective of providing students with first-hand exposure to a professional research environment and enabling them to understand the practical applications of satellite communication in the field of Computer Science and Engineering.

Participants: B. Tech (CSE) 3rd semester students.

Visit Details: During the visit, the students were introduced to the activities, technical operations, and functions of ISRO’s ground infrastructure supporting space missions and satellite communication. A technical interaction was conducted with Dr. Dinesh Kumar Sharma, Senior Scientist, who explained various aspects of the systems and technologies associated with the centre. He provided valuable insights into the functioning of different units and highlighted the role of ground-based infrastructure in tracking, communication, monitoring, and supporting space missions. The students gained an understanding of how satellite signals and data are received, processed, monitored, and managed through sophisticated ground systems, enabling them to relate their academic knowledge of computer science, communication, and data processing with real-world space technology applications.

The interaction also helped students understand the importance of accurate communication, tracking, timing, signal processing, data handling, and system reliability in space missions.

In addition, students also had the opportunity to visit different units and observe their working and gained an understanding of their technical functions. The major sections explored during ISRO visit included:

Telemetry, Tracking and Command:

Students were introduced to the importance of Telemetry, Tracking and Command (TTC) systems in space missions. Telemetry involves receiving information and health/status data from spacecraft, tracking helps determine and monitor spacecraft position and movement, while command systems enable communication of required instructions to spacecraft. ISTRAC plays an important role in providing ground-segment support for ISRO's low-Earth-orbit and interplanetary missions, navigation missions, and launch-vehicle missions.

Satellite Communication:

The students learned about the importance of communication links between satellites and ground stations. The interaction helped them relate concepts such as antennas, radio-frequency communication, signal transmission and reception, modulation, demodulation, and data processing to actual space applications.

Navigation Systems:

The students were introduced to the role of ISRO's navigation infrastructure. The Lucknow facility is associated with the ISRO Navigation Centre-2, which forms part of the ground segment supporting India's regional navigation system. The students gained an understanding of how precise timing and navigation-related information are essential for providing reliable positioning and navigation services

Ground Station Operations:

The visit helped students understand the importance of ground stations in maintaining communication with spacecraft. They learned that ground infrastructure is essential for receiving spacecraft information, monitoring mission health, tracking spacecraft, and supporting mission operations.

The visit was successfully coordinated by Mr. Girjashankar Sahoo (Assistant Professor, MSOET) and Mr. Ankur Srivastava (Training & Placement Coordinator).

Students’ Feedback: The students found the industrial visit highly informative and enriching. They got the opportunity to gain first-hand exposure to space technology, satellite systems, remote sensing, GIS applications, and the practical implementation of space science in various fields. The interactive sessions helped them understand ISRO’s research, technological advancements, and contributions to national development. The visit enhanced their technical knowledge, inspired them to explore careers and research opportunities in the space sector, and provided valuable practical insights beyond the classroom.

Acknowledgement: We express our sincere gratitude to Dr. Dinesh Sharma (Senior Scientist, ISRO) for his valuable guidance and support in making the visit informative. We also extend heartfelt thanks to our Hon’ble Vice Chancellor (Prof. Bhanu Pratap Singh), Registrar (Dr. Girish Chhimwal), Dean Academics (Dr. Neeraj Jain, Lucknow Campus), Dean MSOET (Dr. Rakesh Kumar Yadav) for their encouragement and guidance. We place on record the support of MIRC Team for facilitating the visit. We further acknowledge the valuable support of Dy. Registrar (Dr. Rajesh Singh) for successfully organizing and coordinating the industrial visit.
